Overview

Eastern State Penitentiary Tour

Pedaling through History at your own Pace!

Our bike and moped tours allow you to see Philadelphia in a leisurely pace on Fuji comfort bikes or Kinetic TFR 49cc. 1/2 Hp mopeds. Our guides will tour you through the city and make its history come alive for you!

Our Eastern State Penitentiary tour begins with the Prison tour, followed by a full city Bike tour along a "Low Traffic Route." We'll ride river to river at casual pace. Your tour includes a professional guide, helmets, safety training and a Philly Phlash Ticktet from the end of our route back into the city!

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site Tours include: The central rotunda, restored cells, the solitary confinement yards, the baseball diamond, death row and Al Capone's Cell.

Opened in 1829 as part of a controversial movement to change the behavior of inmates through "confinement in solitude with labor," Eastern State Penitentiary quickly became one of the most expensive and most copied buildings in the young United States. It is estimated that more than 300 prisons worldwide are based on the Penitentiary's wagon-wheel, or "radial" floor plan.

Some of America's most notorious criminals were held in the Penitentiary's vaulted, sky-lit cells, including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone. After 142 years of consecutive use, Eastern State Penitentiary was completely abandoned in 1971, and now stands, a lost world of crumbling cell blocks and empty guard towers.
